Marjorie Newbern Giddens

February 12, 1931 — February 21, 2020

Mrs. Marjorie Yuvonne Newbern Giddens, age 89, of Kirkland, GA,

passed away Friday morning, February 21, 2020, at Lakeside Senior Living,

Douglas, GA, following an extended illness.

 

A native of Atkinson County, Mrs. Giddens was born February 12, 1931, daughter of Henry and Ila Walker Newbern. She was a long-time Public Health nurse in the Atkinson County community and practiced for many years as Lead Surgical Nurse at Clinch Memorial Hospital in Homerville, GA. Her early nursing career began at Coffee Regional Hospital in Douglas, GA. After relocating to Florida, Mrs. Giddens worked for many years in hospitals located in the Miami and Cocoa, Florida areas. Her nursing career spanned more than 40 years. She made an impact on so many lives, especially during her years as a nurse. After retirement, she continued to serve her local community by giving shots, checking blood pressures, and providing advice through phone consultations. She was quick and easy to talk to and she loved canning and teaching her granddaughters the arts of preserving and crocheting. Her other interests included gardening, raising fowl, and shooting guns. Her primary targets were snakes, squirrels, and armadillos.  

 

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pearson, GA. Mrs. Giddens was preceded in death by her parents, brother, H. C. Newbern, and sister, Doris Newbern Martin.

 

Survivors include: two daughters, Gladieth Giddens Nugent of Kirkland, GA, and Patricia Linn Giddens Wright of Atlanta, GA, one brother, Thomas Newbern and wife Marge of Pisgah Forest, NC.

Six grandchildren, Shannon Marcus of Macon, GA, Deidre Nugent Joiner and husband Jeff of Kingsland, GA, Kristan Harper of Kirkland, GA, Zane Nugent of Savannah, GA, Abby Wright Johnson and husband Garrick of Killdeer, ND, Dana Wright of Milledgeville, GA. also survive, along with great-grandchildren, Shelby, Caitlyn, Rylee, Anthony, Ashlynn, Casyn, and Carter Grace, and great-great-grandchild Keegan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Giddens were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2020, at Satilla Memorial Gardens, Douglas, GA, with Rev. Jerry

Worzella, officiating. Special musical selections included "How great Thou Art” recorded music by Harold Vickers and “Amazing Grace" led by family friend, Glenda Lang. The interment followed in Satilla Memorial Gardens cemetery.

 

Serving as active pallbearers were Zane Nugent, Jeff Joiner, Tommy Newbern, Anthony Marcus, Wayne Marx, and Paul Mizell.

 

Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, Ga was in charge of the arrangements.
