Horace John Bennett

Mr. Horace J. Bennett age 89 of Pearson, Ga. passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Atkinson County, Mr. Bennett was born January 13, l934 in Pearson, Ga. to the late Lawson Coleman Bennett, Sr. and Gladys McNeal Bennett. Mr. Bennett served in the U. S. Army with the 82nd Airborne and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. After his service in the Army, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he served for 19 years before retiring as Chief Petty Officer. During his Naval career he served on the USS Oriskany and was named Sailor of the Month and Sailor of the Year. Mr. Bennett worked various jobs before retiring as Manager of Family Dollar in Homerville, Ga. He was a member of the Homerville Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. His many hobbies included golf, fishing, gardening, genealogy and tinkering with different things, whether it be mechanical or otherwise.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Bennett, stepmother, Dorean Taylor Bennett, 4 brothers, Herman Bennett, Jimmy Bennett, Hershel Bennett, and Ronnie Bennett, 5 sisters, Lucille Jacques, Martha Sue Bennett, Betty jean Smith, Linda Newham, and Christine Bennett.

Survivors include:

Wife:  Joan Bennett of Pearson, Ga.

Daughter:  Sherry Herrin and husband Roy of Homerville, Ga.

2 Sons:  David Bennett and wife Donna of Tifton, Ga.

              Steve Bennett and wife Suzette of Douglas, Ga.

4 Brothers:  Coleman Bennett, Jr. of Texas

                    Frankie Bennett of Jacksonville, Fl.

                    Kenny Bennett of Brunswick, Ga.

                    Donald Bennett of Brunswick, Ga.

2 Sisters:  Norma June Fort of North Carolina

                 Eva Osbourne of Atkinson Community

9 Grandchildren:  Kelly Barrett, Jason Bennett, Chris Bennett, Codi Bennett, Mandy Tarver, Kailee Bennett, Leslie Bennett, Scott Bennett, and Andy Bennett.

Several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

To honor Mr. Bennett’s wishes no services will be held. Memorialization is by cremation.

Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. is in charge of the arrangements.
