Herbert Adair Tanner, Jr.

May 4, 1946 — April 30, 2024

Mr. Herbert Adair Tanner, Jr., age 77 passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the Morris Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Fl. following an extended illness.  

 

Born May 4, l946, Mr. Tanner was the son of the late Herbert Adair, Sr. and Ozelle Carter Tanner.  He was a retired farmer and a Vietnam era Veteran of the U. S. Air Force.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Georgia football and the Atlanta Braves. He was a longtime member of Stokesville Baptist Church and really enjoyed spending time with his church family. 

 

Survivors include:

Wife:  Betty Tanner of Axson, Ga.

 

Daughter:  Martha Zell Tanner of Douglas, Ga.

 

2 Sisters:  Patsy Cunningham of Fayetteville, Ga.

                 Jan Haigler and husband B.B. of Fairview, N.C.

 

Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Tanner were held on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at Stokesville Baptist Church with Rev. Leroy Spivey officiating. Special music included “It is Well” by soloist Kay Pierce, and “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Near to the Heart of God” sung by the congregation with Patty Spivey accompanying at the piano.   Soft music for the Prelude and the Postlude was by Patty Spivey, pianist. The interment followed in Stokesville Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by a U. S. Air Force Honor Guard from Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Ga.

 

Serving as active pallbearers were Tony Rowell, Mike Vining, Kenny Vining, Cray Grantham, Van Grantham, Patrick Spivey, Phillip Murray, and David Batchelor.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Adult Sunday School Class of Stokesville Baptist Church and Dr. Lydia Tanner.

 

Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
