Ira Wendell Vickers

Mr. Ira Wendell Vickers, age 75 of Willacoochee, Ga. passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in Willacoochee, Ga. from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident.   Born June 21, l940 in Bacon County, Mr. Vickers had made his home in Willacoochee for most of his life and was the son of the late Henry Woodrow and Hazel Cannon Vickers. He was a l958 graduate of Atkinson County High School and a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the Vietnam War.  He retired from the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier after 30 years of service.  He was an active member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Willacoochee where he sang in the choir, was a former Sunday school teacher and drove the church bus for the children’s ministry. He was also a member of the Mable Chris Bible Study Group. Wendell was truly a people person who loved his family and brought joy to everyone he came in contact with.     Survivors include: Wife: Gail Russ Vickers of Willacoochee, Ga. 2 Daughters: Jill McEachin and husband David of Tifton, Ga.                        Wendy Mercer and husband Ben of Douglas, Ga. 2 Brothers: Henry Woodrow “Bud” Vickers and wife Juanita of Westminster, S.C.                    Ashley Vickers and wife Lena Faye of Pearson, Ga. 2 Sisters: Beadie Davis of Brunswick, Ga.                  Kay Mullis and husband Lamar of Millwood, Ga. 6 Grandchildren: Annabelle McEachin, Grace Mercer, Jane Margaret McEachin, Lucinda McEachin, Carson Mercer, and Daniel David McEachin. Several Nieces, Nephews, and other relatives also survive.    Funeral services for Mr. Vickers were held Friday, April 15, 2016 at 4:00 P.M. at the Willacoochee First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Huffstuttler and Mrs. Beth Rousseau officiating. The Eulogy was given by Dr. David McEachin son in law of Mr. Vickers.  Special musical selections included “It is Well with My Soul” presented by the church choir with Bonnie Kunberger, pianist and “Amazing Grace” rendered by the attending congregation with Bonnie Kunberger, pianist.  Soft hymns for the Prelude and Postlude were by Bonnie Kunberger, pianist. The interment followed in the Willacoochee City Cemetery.   Serving as active pallbearers were: Edsel Lewis, Phillip Knowles, Allen Mizell, Joe Taft, Jim McCranie and John Lindsey. Honorary pallbearers were: Buddy Willis, John Kunberger and Bill Cater.   Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
