Mary Smith Davis

Mrs. Mary Smith Davis, age 82 of Axson, Ga. passed away Thursday, February 02, 2017 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga. following an extended illness.   A native of Pierce County, Mrs. Davis was born January 1, l935, daughter of Lester and Lillian Dixon Smith. She had made her home in Axson for most of her life. In her early years, she worked at a bomb factory and later at Goldkist Inc. for many years. After retiring she enjoyed being a homemaker and cooking. When she and her late husband Bunk lived on Hwy. 82 in Axson, their home was opened to all who wanted to eat and drink coffee. It was commonly known as Mary’s kitchen. During Desert Storm, she started a letter writing campaign to write letters to soldiers overseas. She wrote and received many letters from soldiers far away from home. She attended the Axson Church of God of Prophecy and was preceded in death by her husband, Marion “:Bunk” Davis and twin sister, Martha Gilliard. Survivors include: Daughter: Teresa Stults and husband Bob of Axson, Ga.   4 Sons: Lester Davis and wife Lillie of Homerville, Ga.              Ricky Davis and wife Shelia of Axson, Ga.              Mike Davis of Axson, Ga.              Micky Davis of Axson, Ga.  Sister: Lawana Lee of Jacksonville, Fl.   9 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive    Funeral services for Mrs. Davis were held Sunday, February 05, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Axson Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Chris Boyd and Rev. Brian Buffington officiating. Special music included “That Sounds Like Home to Me” rendered by Tammy Wood and Laretta Boyd accompanied by cd. Prelude and Postlude music “How Great Thou Art” was presented by cd. The interment followed in the Axson Cemetery.   Serving as active pallbearers were: Henry Mancil, Ricky Carver, Casey Taft, Fred Mullis, Hank Davis and Chris Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Glenda Tanner, Diane Adams, Sharron Smith, Vickie Hendrix, Jessie Burch, and Brenda Holcomb.   Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
